Marching Band

photo and story by Dustin Saffel

Yankton Middle School Band is a fine arts class similar to Art, Concert Choir, and Orchestra. The Band director of the middle school is Tessa Belgum. The sixth graders in the band can only do concert band and have band class second and seventh periods. While the seventh and eighth graders are required to do concert band and marching band, their class periods are third and eighth period. Seventh and eighth graders also have the ability to join jazz band. The marching band has 136 students in it.

This year, the seventh and eighth graders played “Havana,” arranged by Matt Conaway as their marching tune. The drum majors this year are Sawyer Maibaum and Allayna Seiler. They have traveled to Parker, Sd, and Menno, Sd this year. They also played at our Homecoming Parade and our very own March to the Meridian. In Parker, they were awarded second place and best drumline for the junior high division. While in Menno, they also won second place. And in past years, they have been awarded first place at Beresford in 2023 and second at Menno Band Day 2023.

Fall Dance Coming Soon!

by Summer Olson

There is a fall dance coming up this month, it’s exciting but there are a few things that kids should know. First of all 6th graders are not allowed to come to the dance, however the 6th grade student council will be serving concessions there. You cannot enter if you have any missing work, your teachers will make sure that you have no work and will give you a ticket to show at the entrance. Along with that ticket you’ll need five dollars for admission. Once you are in you can’t leave until your parents pick you up. It runs from 7:00 to 9:00. Nice dress is not required but the dress code still applies. It is October 27th. There is no theme but it will still be fun. Have fun!

Special Someones!

by Jerry Lati

A "Special Someone" is when teachers write your name on a blank piece of paper then they turn it in the office but that’s only if they see if you’re working hard and well. Once they turned it in the office they put in a bowl or jar and pick out a name for each grade. Once that is done Mrs. Todd or someone else will announce the people who got there name chosen. She will come someone name from each grade. If you heard your name get called you go down to 6th and 8th grade office. Once you are there you will claim your reward.
